Dead Pages & 404 Not Found Errors
It is your responsibility to ensure links from your site and pages on your site and all external links going out from your site are working. Failure to check and resolve broken links are seen by the Search Engines as bad housekeeping and illustrate that you are not keeping your website in order and not spending sufficient time to check it.
!You can never be 100% sure of your link integrity and uptime 24/7 but you must endeavour as part of your SEO program regularly check your site and links and to repair any broken pages or remove links to sites no longer operating.
The impression the search engine gains when it sees broken links is not published
but from an obvious perspective if you liken the Search Engines Visit to
your site like an inspection of troops or parade if they see all the links/soldiers
standing to attention they are happy to promote and give your site a clean
bill of health. On the other hand if they see a few soldiers/pages not working
or standing to attention this gives them an impression of sloppiness and poor
control by you and they may demote your site and give you less brownie points
as they don't want to be seen to be delivering your site in the top results
to their searchers if some or many of the pages of your site are not working.
That makes good sense to check your site and its overall image.
!Give a good impression to the Search Engines Bot's and let them see you pay attention to details and they will respect you for that and mark your site accordingly
It is also known that search Engines Bots will defer visiting your site more frequently if they see broken links and unacceptable level of 404 errors / pages not found. Search Engine Bots want to see a 100% Link integrity and so it is important you do your best to keep up appearance and smarten up your housekeeping. You can obtain some link checking software or ask White Hat to perform this housekeeping duty for you which is part of our ongoing SEO program for our clients.
