Basic Web Site Design Tips
Firstly you need to make sure your website:
- Looks Professional and Inviting
- Minimize the amount of animations and images on the home page that slow up the initial download time
- Avoid Flash intros
- Choose a font and text that is easy to read and standardize the font style and size throughout the site
- Stick to simple designs most fast loading sites have very simple designs. Complicated designs will slow down your pages.
- Clean Layout Design, a clean layout that uses a lot of white space enhances a site's looks.
- Keep the customer within 3 clicks from buying a product
- Keep a similar style to the site pages so navigation links are in the same place, people like familiarity and to know where to look for what to do next
- Search Engines cant read images and can only read words, so keep your home page text and relevant pages key word rich and relevant to the page topic
- Make sure the design is suitable on most screen resolutions 800x600 and 1024 x 768
- Neat and Easy Navigation of links on your site plays a big decider in how long your visitors stays and explores your site. Ask yourself, what do visitors do as soon as the site opens? They would probably read the content that confronts them and then look around to find any other page links that interests them.
- Cross Browser Compatible Make sure you check your site for Internet Explorer 5+, Mozilla Firefox 1.0, Opera 7.0 and Netscape Navigator 6+ as they constitute 95% of the worlds browsers.
