‘Miserable failure’ links to Bush

George W Bush has been Google bombed.

Web users entering the words "miserable failure" into the popular Google search engine are directed to the biography of the president on the White House website.

The trick is possible because Google searches more than just the contents of web pages – it also counts how often a site is linked to, and with what words. Thus, members of an online community can affect the results of Google searches – called "Google bombing" – by linking their sites to a chosen one. Weblogger Adam Mathes is credited with inventing the practice in 2001, when he used it to link the phrase "talentless hack" to a friend’s website.

Link Anchor Text

The Anchor Text is the words / phrases which are placed on another site’s description of your site under the actual link. The above examples are living proof of the power of the ‘Anchor Text’ and how this can affect and influence search results for websites that don’t actually contain those words or phrases.

How can this be possible?

First try it for yourself – go to www.google.com and search for ‘miserable failure’

You will see the number one website listed is none other than the official G W Bush website President of the United States http://www.whitehouse.gov/president/gwbbio.html

Another interesting search for the words ‘liar liar’ – look who is at number 4?
Can you guess? Try it for yourself

This has been achieved by web site owners placing the G W Bush website on their links page and adding the anchor text ‘miserable failure’. Other web users doing the same has thus pointed a large number of links pointing to G W Bush’s website. This is being read by the Google spiders, which are attributing the anchor text to the President’s website. This shows the power of words when used in your linking strategy.

What does this prove?

Well, it does actually prove how such tactics can manipulate the search results on search engines such as the all powerful Google. Think how this could help you!
